Yup, only five more days until Backwoods Bean opens.
Here's my new "Billy Bean" foyer sign. (I wanted to paint the whole foyer mustard but that was a "no-go" with the landlord.) The black area is blackboard paint which acts just like a blackboard when you write on it with chalk. I'll use it for short-term messages of various kinds. Billy Bean is, of course, Wawa's creation.
The last major project is the toilet facility which has a floor space of exactly 4 feet by 4 feet, half of which is taken up by the toilet and lavoratory. On Monday I removed the toilet and lavoratory in order to remove the orange shag carpet and replace it with cheap (77¢ per square foot) ceramic floor tile. The four walls are being painted terra cotta red. Now if you don't have the jitters from the coffee you aspire to express during your visit to the "john", you will once you shut the door! Hell on earth is a space 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet with nothing but a toilet and wash basis and you in it.
I ordered the first batch of coffee today: American regular and decaf, French roast and espresso. The first roaster I'm trying is located in North Carolina and, if you get your order in by 11:00 am, your coffee will be roasted and shipped that day and will be in your hands the next day. Pretty efficient, I'd say.
Kermit, who owns the barbershop next door and runs it on a first come-first served, told me today that he is going to amend his "leave the barbershop and you lose your place" to allow folks to come next door to Backwoods Bean and buy a cup of cofee to carry back to the barbershop. That's great news and I didn't even have to suggest it!
A realtor came in today with her granddaughter of about eight years and wanted to know if I took Mastercard. I explained that we weren't exactly open yet. I had a pot of French roast on and gave both her and her granddaughter a cup. She took business cards and promises to return on Tuesday with clients. More good news.

You'd be well advised to accept Visa and M/C
ReplyDeleteWhy not making it a good, old-fashioned cash place? Your coffee beans aren't plastic either.....
ReplyDeleteIt's a nice idea but many -- if not most -- young people (under the age of 30) in the US don't carry cash with then anymore. I'm amazed and have actually had to build a "plastic" cost into my coffee prices. The fee for electronic payment consists of a small fixed portion (15 or 20 cent) and a percentage portion (less than 2% of the total but depends on credit vs. debit).
