And All the Rest

Now we come to a subset of beliefs (green and gray areas) devoid of knowledge (blue area). This a group of beliefs for which we have no physical evidence: we have not seen, heard, felt, tasted or smelled any truths associated with them. We have neither metrics nor reasoned thought (knowledge)to establish their truth (their "is") or lack of truth (their "isn't").

These beliefs are sometimes held to be associated with truths that transcend observation and reason. Rather, these "transcendental truths" associated with beliefs by what is commonly called faith. Example: You can hold a belief that an elevator's cable will not break when you ride in the elevator but you have faith when you ride in it without logical proof or material evidence. For the more observant, this faith may be founded on a document (elevator permit), written by a total stranger (elevator inspector) and posted on the elevator wall, that the elevator's cable will support you under the conditions listed therein. The less observant may ride with either blind faith (others are riding the elevator) or complete ignorance that the cable might ever break.

These "transcendental truths" are the very foundation of all faith-based religions. Indeed, no component of transcendental religions is ever based on observation and reason for it was the lack of knowledge that gave rise to their very creation.
