Sweet Dreams
The world's best/worst healthcare system has determined that I am diabetic. Seems that the beta cells in the islets of Langerhans of my pancreas are just not up the their job of regulating the amount of glucose in my bloodstream these days and need a little help from a drug known generically as glipizide.
Or, to be more explicit, N-(4-[N-(cyclohexylcarbamoyl)sulfamoyl]phenethyl)-5-methylpyrazine-2-carboxamide. Developed by Pfizer (but now sold generically), it has been marketed as Glucotrol since 1984.
This is prescription drug #7 for me. Next week I add #8 (to keep the liver from making too much glucose while sleeping at night) and the following week, #9 (something to do with the cardiovascular system). Better living through chemistry!
Along with this diagnosis comes the American Diabetics Association diet of 1800 calories a day.
Now, a Moon Pie and an RC Cola has 460 calories. A Big Mac has 450. The Spicy Italian $5 Footlong at Subway weighs in at 540 calories. A cone of DQ soft ice cream? 470. And that all together comes to 1920 calories. Color me dead.
Getting old is a bitch.

Living with Diabetes mellitus Type 2 for about 10 years now. No insulin shooting, just 3 pills a day: 2 in the morning (Avandia 8mg & Glucophage 1000mg), 1 in the evening (Glucophage again). Works fine. Keeps the sugar within 80 to 120/130mg, with occassional but harmless peaks once in a while. No special diet, eat just about everything, except for sweets and pastries, and no sugar loaded drinks. Wine - red or white - is O.K. with me, and a beer here and there is fine as well. Lots of physical exercise and losing weight are VERY helpful! Don't panic, there are some more people out there around the globe than you and me who are living a satisfying life despite a little Diabetes mellitus.
ReplyDeleteAm there, doing that. Although I'm not terribly fastidious about it. Exercise will be your friend. As will staying away from those sweet barbecue sauces you love. ;-)
