The Ineffable

Here is one of the greatest quotes that I've ever read. It's by Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907-1972).

What smites us with unquenchable amazement is not that which we grasp and are able to convey but that which lies within our reach but beyond our grasp; not the quantitative aspect of nature but something qualitative; not what is beyond our range of time and space but the true meaning, source and end of being, in other... words, the ineffable.

It's not the existence of the moon and planets and stars but the wonder of them. It's not the physics and chemistry of heavenly bodies but the beauty of them. It's not the source of their beauty but the unknowable truths that manifest it.

What a great puzzle we have to evoke that great emotion we know as pleasure within us!
