The Union Tide Is Going Out

Yesterday both houses of the Michigan legislature vote in legislation to make Michigan a "right-to-work" state with respect to private unions such the Teamsters unions, the AFL-CIO unions (including the UAW) and the independent unions. The Governor will sign it into law next Tuesday (following a mandatory 5-day wait). Similar legislation for public unions (including the dastardly and despicable NEA) is next on their agenda. Good for them. Unions in the Rust Belt are going the way of unions in the rest of the country.

And just how are they going?

Not too good ... if you are a union supporter.

Yup. Union membership is down by two thirds from its peak to about 12% of the entire wage and salaried workforce. The small salaried bunch, by the way are mostly airline pilots and professionals in the aerospace industry (notably engineers at Boeing).

Now if the country can only survive four more years under the current presidential administration ...
