My Daily Newspaper

I recently subscribed to the Winston-Salem Journal, our newspaper of record. The subscription price is $8 per month ... delivered. It's a sad shadow of its former self from the days when I was a kid.

In our house, the Journal and its afternoon version, the Sentinel, WAS the source of news in our house. The radio gave a 5-minute news cap once an hour, and that included the weather forecast. We had no television in our house.

Today's Journal is thin. Almost no national news. Little state news. Decent coverage of local news. It's about equally divided page-wise between two sections: Section A - News and Section B - Sports. Advertising  inserts are commonly larger than either or both.national news.

Obits and the comics are a mainstay. Sometimes the Op Ed page can be interesting on the local level.

If I want national news, I must go to the large national newspapers to which I don't subscribe, television which I don't watch and/or Internet "news" media which shames itself -- both right and left -- by claiming to be news media.

Anyhow, it's great to have a newspaper once again to read while enjoying my morning coffee ... despite leaving mew clueless about what's going on in the world.
