Female Genital Mutilation & God
A physician in Detroit, Jumana Nagarwala, has been charged with female genital mutilation, a crime made illegal in the US in 1996, on girls aged between six and eight for 12 years. Like nearly all "cutters", Nagarwala (shown here) is a woman.
Female genital mutilation is a barbaric practice of the worst kind. Like male circumcision, it serves no medical purpose. It adds nothing to the life of the victim. It only takes away ... in ways far worse than circumcision.
Female genital mutilation is performed as a religious practice, almost exclusively by Muslim on Muslims. Oddly, the Koran does not prescribe the practice. Yet different Islamic sects consider it obligatory, honorable, optional or preferred. It is estimated that over 200 million women and girls are the victims of female genital mutilation.
Oh but the things we do for our gods.
The Islamic scholar will tell you that Islam itself is not to be blamed because it is not an actor. Rather, the individual Muslim is the actor, be it the practice of female genital mutilation or terrorism. The religion itself is to be held as pure. To that my response is Nazism was not an actor either but it lead to the Holocaust and to a war in which over 60 million people were killed, which was about 3% of world's population at that time in history.
I grow weary of Muslims and their blind eye to the atrocities that their religion spawn. If one Islamic sect wishes to annihilate another Islamic sect, that's a fight in which I have no dog. But beyond that, the treatment of women in general and young girls in particular by Muslim men is abhorrent. The question is how do non-Muslims get a dog in THAT fight, or do they, like the Islamic scholars, merely wave their arms in surrender?
At least here in the US, female-genital-mutilation "cutters" can be imprisoned for life. But that is little consolation to the 200 million victims worldwide.
