Consciousness and the Meaning of Life

 

 

One of the fundamental questions of philosophy is in regards to the meaning of life and many assertions have been made over the year. But no one definitive answer has ever been found.

The logical first step in answering it gaining an understanding why we have a conscious perception of the question at all. But is that not a circular question with the conscious mind asking the conscious mind why the conscious mind exists? For that we have not answer. We can only know that the consciousness mind requires the existence of a functional material brain. No brain, no consciousness to ask the question. 

We further know that the content on consciousness is a product of biological determinism in the chain of experiences we consciously encounter while living. Out of all possible experiences, the path to each new one we experience is dependent on the current experience. It is as if life is a game of pinball in which the ball in the pinball machine progresses through the machine as determined by the sequence in which the ball bounces off which bumper. Life begins with the pinball being "born" as it emerges from the spring loaded plunger. The course of the journey through life is unknown and all we know is that eventually the pinball become "dead" as it reaches the bottom on the machine and your "game of life" is over.

The outcome of the bumper the ball hits may be many and varied but only one is universal with all players. For the game to continue, one of the bumpers you encounter must be procreating the life of new players to play the "game of life" after you are dead and gone. Only then does the "game of life" have a universal purpose to which all other experiences are subordinate. And so it is that the meaning of life is life itself and we can know it only by our conscious awareness of its passing along its life path from birth to death. Indeed, everything else (including the nature of consciousness) is conjecture.
