Sheep Rock Visited
Since first arriving on Sunset Ridge in 1999, we have looked across the valley below Low Notch Gap towards Sheep Rock, a knob with an outcropping of rock. Today, the CFO and I visited it for the first time by hiking there from the house.
In this view to the north from the house, the nearest (and thus darkest) peak is Sheep Rock. As the crow flies, it's only a half mile away. But getting there and back by foot was a 3.5 hour hike along a circuitous route though the valley 400 feet, or so, below us. We hiked along streams, property boundaries, logging roads in various states of disrepair, deer tracks and, as necessary, straight up and down hills.
I first attempted to visit the summit several years ago using the southern side which has the easiest access. But, alas, I ran into the guy who owns 140 acres of the summit. He was hunting grouse and carrying a nice Italian over-and-under shotgun. I introduced myself, announcing that we were neighbors from across the valley. When I asked if I might visit the summit, he didn't say "yes". In fact, he said he didn't like people on his property and gave me permission to shoot anyone I saw there. I explained that that would be a half-mile shot from the house and beat a hasty retreat. Thus, we made yesterday's circuitous route on the eastern side along his property boundary, to the northern side which he does not own.
And, here's that view of Sunset Ridge from atop Sheep Rock I've want to see for all those years. As usual, the anticipation is better than the realization.
Our house is pretty much hidden in the woods about a third of the way across from the left edge.
This view down the valley to the north towards Virginia is much more interesting.
Here's the very top of the large expanse of exposed rock on the northeastern face. It's covered with lichen and moss and other slippery stuff. From the top, you cannot see the face unless you just happen to be falling to your death after slipping over the edge!
We made it back home at 6:00, just in time for a nice Martini at dusk.
