Time
The battery in my watch is weak and all I know for sure is that it is later than indicated by the hour and minute hands. That's OK because I'm living this week with the sun as my only timepiece.
I awoke today to rain mid-morning. Good time to get my laptop connected with the wireless station on the weather server in the loft. It was no great surprise to find no other wireless networks available save that! And, I must say that it does feel a little like I'm cheating technology to be sitting here in the woods atop the Blue Ridge Mountains, blogging away on my laptop with a wireless connection to the millions upon millions of computers around the planet on the World Wide Web. Somehow woods and wireless just don't seem compatible.
Speaking of woods, the house is staying very warm with wood heat. The temperature was 67°F on the main floor when I arose this morning. I refired the wood stove and by midday the temperature was above 70; it has stayed that way all day. The Galileo thermometer is now hovering between 72 and 74, meaning that the fireplace is now radiating heat to the surroundings. The temperature of the air coming through the passages from the basement ceiling is now 89. I'm thinking of adding computer cooling fans in the passages to nudge the air along in time of need when the temperature differential is smaller.
The rain ended and Sam and I hiked on the trails in the woods until near dark. The rain had melted the surface and made them as slippery as owl poop. The deer have adapted my trails for the most part and help to keep them clean. They are, however, inclined to jump over fallen branches rather than move them. And, they think it's great fun to divert the track under branches just three feet off the ground rather than the six I require. We go our separate ways with two paths around these obstructions.
With last night's chili still fresh in my mind, I dared no attempt to top it this evening. I did find some frozen shrimp (Food Lion, two for the price of one) in the freezer and lightly sauteed them in garlic butter to which I later added some tomato soup (left over from lunch) and some cream to make a pink sauce. Alas, since I had cooked no pasta as a starch, I made some brochette with Trader Joe's Tuscan Pane ($1.99 for a large loaf) and green onions and had that with a simple green leaf lettuce salad with left-over grape tomatoes, raw green onions, an unmodified store-bought basil pesto dressing and a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese. Don't tell the CFO, but I also had a nip of her beloved Cotes de Gascogne white wine with the dinner. Quick. Simple. Good.
