Mountain Music
The Alleghany County Public Library sponsors a "Hometown and Heritage" series of programs throughout the summer including readings, lectures and musical performances. This evening I attended a performance by the Buck Mountain Band, a local dance band from Grayson County, VA that specializes in fiddle tunes.
Now, folks, it was mountain music as it should be. The concert was held in an intimate setting (the meeting room of the library) before a small audience (maybe 50 of us) without any electronics (no microphones, no amplifiers, no speakers). Just an hour and a half of traditional fiddle tunes by a retired English professor (fiddle), his wife (guitar), editor of a small-town newspaper (banjo, claw hammer style), schoolteacher (bass) and one semi-professional musician (guitar). Wonderful stuff.
Oh, did I mention that the concert was free of charge and homemade goodies were served during intermission?
And, you might ask, just how big is the Alleghany County Public Library? Well, let's put it this way: the mens room is a one-holer.
Country road, take me home to the place I belong ...
