Urine Trouble

I received from Large today the following comment being circulated around the Internet by email:

Like a lot of folks, I have a job. I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as they see fit. In order to get that paycheck some of us are required to pass a random drug test, which I have no problem with.

What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass the urine test. Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check, because I have to pass one to earn it for them?

Please understand, I believe in helping people get back on their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping someone sit on their butt using my taxes to get high.

Could you imagine how much money a state would save and how much faster people would improve their lives if individuals had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check?
Now, folks, if anyone were qualified to make these comments, it would be Large. He was a long-time employee of IBM. He uses tobacco products (cigars) only when influenced by others (especially me). He is an alcoholic who has consumed no alcohol in over a decade. And, to the best of my knowledge, is not now and has never been a smoker, snorter or shooter of illicit materials.

Our founding fathers, of course, would have found him to be something of a total bore.

In those days, you see, the average adult male consumed 6 gallons of booze a year (compared to 2 gallons now). Church attendance was at 17% (compared to 32% now). A law was enacted by Virginia in 1619 requiring planters to grow marijuana (among other useful crops) and the first legislation making its use illegal was enacted by Utah in 1915 on behalf of the Mormon Church.

What happened?

Well, capitalism and the industrial revolution happened. Needing dependable workers, campaigns against the consumption of alcohol and other drugs were launched. Church attendance on Sunday (to help ensure sobriety on Monday) was encouraged (thus causing Karl Marx to brand religion the "opiate of the masses") and sometimes even required as a condition of employment. Even trace amounts of cocaine were removed from Coca Cola.

So, there you have it, Large. It was Thomas Watson and his lot who brainwashed us into thinking the government should control what goes into a person's veins ... whether purchased with your tax dollars or not.
