Visiting the Vet

Sam was due for her annual physical and set of shots this month and Murphy had developed a rash down where the family jewels used to be. So, I took both her and Murphy to the Twin Oaks Veterinary Hospital over in Twin Oaks this morning.

Now, you don't make reservations for things like this. You just go and they put your dog's records on the bottom of the pile until they work their way to the top and it's your turn. The wait is seldom long and the waiting room, maybe 10 x 10 ft in size, is conducive to conversations with others who are also waiting with their cats and dogs.

Our vet this morning was Nash Williams, the owner. He's quite a character with a unruly beard and mustache and is always dressed in a dirty tee shirt, jeans and rubber Wellington boots. He's a great guy, loved by everyone in the community. But, if you didn't know better, you would take him for a hobo or the handman!

Sam was first up. Now, she doesn't mind the poking and prodding but just don't mess with her nose and toes. The bordatella vaccine is usually administered nasally but can be given by injection for tough customers like Sam. They were fresh out of the injectable kind. So, the technician and I held Sam down on the table and after what seemed to be five minutes, the three of us finally got enough vaccine down her nose and mouth to count. Then it was on to her annual toe nail trim. Same deal.

Murphy was due all his shots next month and so we gave him the full treatment, including a rabies shot and physical exam. The aforementioned rash appeared one night this week after Murphy returned from chasing off the deer. Nash seemed to think it was caused by an abrasion from a brier or some such thing. So, the technician and I held Murphy down as he sheared the hair from an area Murphy holds to be kinda personal and treated the rash.

All done it was two physical exams, more shots than I can remember, a nail trim and treatment of a wound. Total cost? $76.

Shhh! Don't tell anybody.
