Them There Ribs

When at the emergency room the morning of my crash, x-ray images were made of my ribs to determine if any were broken. None were. Yet, my ribs have been, and continue to be, the primary source of pain during my recovery.

Raleigh Orthopedic has consistently refused to help in any way. They simply indicate that the don't do ribs. Seems that ribs are in the domain of thoracic medicine. That would mean a visit with my primary physician to obtain a referral to a thoracic surgeon.

So it was that as I was in considerable pain last night, I did Internet research on ribs. Them there ribs are just loaded with nerve endings.

Seems that once it has been established by x-ray imagery that one or more broken ribs have not penetrated the lungs, there is simply nothing that a doctor can do for you. Bruised ribs are simply going to hurt like hell for 3 to 4 weeks and fractured ribs, 6 to 8 weeks. Sneezing, coughing or tripping over the family dog will make you feel as if you are going to die and prolong the recovery process.

Treatment consists restriction of motion (rest), application of cold packs over the affected area and the use of anti-inflammatory pain killers (ibuprofen).

This morning I began taking ibuprofen and slept non-stop from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm with absolutely no pain for the first time since August 11. Wonderful!
