Critters

The CFO gave me a wonderful gift for Christmas, a Wildview Xtreme 2 wildlife camera.

It's basically a 2-megapixel digital camera (center) with a built-in 2G SD memory card, flash (bottom), motion detector (top) and microprocessor in a waterproof cash. Switches enable the user to turn the flash off, on, or automated (light level). Another switch enables to camera to take one, three or six still images in a row or a 20-second video when the motion detector senses motion. The time between images can be selected at 1, 5, 10 and 20 second intervals.

To use the camera, one simply uses the strap provided for the purpose to strap the camera around a handy tree, post or the like, turn it to the ON position and go away.

My first effort night before last produced nothing on the Fire Trail despite deer footprint. So last night I move the camera to a well trodden section of the Cross Trail and got twelve images from two motion triggers. Only one contained a critter.

To my surprise the first critter captured on the camera at 5:24 this morning was a coyote! Needless to say, it didn't wait around for the next five flashes.

An earlier trigger at 9:17 last night captured nothing but the camera was not exactly pointing down the trail (as indicated by the coyote appearing on the extreme right of the picture).

To correct the aiming problem and to enable the camera to be located virtually anywhere, I've already constructed a monopod on which the camera can be strapped and which is simply held in place by a spike on the bottom of the monopod that is pressed into the earth.

More pictures later!
