DOT Highway Department

Last winter the road in front of the house was damaged when equipment plowing the snow dug completely through the pavement and into the ground.

That the damage had not been repaired did not surprise me because the road is at the "end of the line" and my house is the last one.  So, last week I finally remember to make this photograph and take a printed copy with "circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back" to the DOT Highway Department for Alleghany County on my way into town. I gave it to he person at the desk, explained the situation and she entered the information into a computer database. She filed the photograph in a file holder on her desk. I thanked her  and left, expecting my request for repairs to get lost in a bureaucratic logjam.

Now, I have been impressed with the response of these folks to snow removal  but I was still surprise when a flotilla of yellow trucks showed up this week bearing hot aspalt, gravel, spreader, roller and men with rakes. In an hours time the road was repaired and cleaned of loose gravel, all very neatly done with no collateral damage whatsoever.

I thanked the major domo profusely who explained that this was one of his road to maintain and that he may well ahve been the one who did the damage in the first place!

We often badmouth government employees and their services but I continue to be highly impressed by this Alleghany County DOT Highway Department bunch.
